When Eric Maki launched Terra Tech Surfaces in Minnesota, his vision was to sell premium, sintered stone shower systems at scale, not just one-off “designer” bathrooms.
The demand was there. The bottleneck was quoting.
Every bathroom pulled together panels, pans, finishes, and shower doors from multiple vendors. In their old takeoff software, each project felt completely custom. Estimates took an hour or two, and when installation work picked up, quoting inevitably fell behind.
“Prior we used our takeoff software… every project was so specific… If I need to adjust something or the client wants to see a different color, I have to go obviously send them a new quote. They can’t do it on their own.”
As a young company, that delay hurt. Leads went cold while they were “too busy” to price the work.
“We miss out on a lot of leads because we get so busy doing the work than sometimes quoting the work… A couple days go by… another day goes by…”
To fix it, Terra Tech needed a way to turn their complex shower systems into reusable libraries that anyone on the team could quote from in minutes. That’s where Bolster came in.
Terra Tech didn’t start by trying to model everything under the sun. With Bolster’s team, they focused first on what they already knew best: their core shower system and vendors.
“We started with the knowns, right? We started with things that we were comfortable with, and then I used Alex and the team to work on something that I was comfortable with and like a pricing structure I already knew…”
Together, they:
“Everything that we don’t have pricing on, we’ve used the auto cost… People be like, ‘Can you paint my bathroom?’ And I’m like, sure, let me pull auto cost… We’re able to offer other things that we may not know pricing on, but we feel pretty comfortable with the pricing that Bolster has sourced.”
Those assemblies became the building blocks of Terra Tech’s bathroom library.
The next step was to make those assemblies interactive — so customers and designers could explore options themselves without needing a brand new quote.
Eric leaned heavily on selectors and variations in Bolster:
“We use variations, for example… and we use like the selector tool… In our instance we use it for these porcelain panels and the sintered stone panels and we have matte finishes, polished finishes… within the same color… maybe that panel costs $50 less for the matte version as it does the gloss, and we are able to in real time let the customer choose what they want.”
He used that same pattern for:
At first, this setup work was non-trivial:
“Building that out was… difficult at first, but now… I mean, I could probably build out, you know, 5 selectors easily today with full products. Once you’re comfortable in the software, it’s pretty easy to use.”
But once the library of selectors and assemblies was in place, the payoff was immediate.
With structured assemblies and selectors ready, Eric no longer had to block off an evening just to build a single quote.
He described a recent estimate that, pre-Bolster, he would have procrastinated for days:
“I was doing an estimate that I normally would have probably put off for about 3 or 4 days just because I didn’t have time to get to it… I literally… created it probably within about, you know, 15 minutes… something that normally would have taken me probably, you know, an hour to 2 hours.”
Now his workflow looks more like this:
For repeatable work, he doesn’t even need to start from zero — he reuses and adapts what’s already there:
“I know enough about even previous estimates that I built, that I can go in there, look at previous estimates very quickly because there’s a pipeline… I can even just duplicate that estimate if I really wanted to, and then just adjust the square footage. Pretty easy.”
That shift — from bespoke takeoff each time to reusable libraries — is what unlocked consistent 15-minute bathroom quotes.
Getting quotes out faster has had a direct impact on Terra Tech’s sales performance.
Instead of letting leads sit while they catch up on site work, Eric can knock out quotes quickly, send them the same night, and keep momentum going. He’s seen that turn into a measurable increase in closed jobs:
“Yes, like I said, it’s all on the front end that I’ve captured. I mean, I bet our win rate has gone up… we’ll call it, I don’t know, 100%, but like, you know, I bet it’s doubled.”
The same library-driven approach is also what’s allowing Terra Tech to expand beyond bathrooms sooner than planned.
They originally expected to focus only on bathrooms for the first couple of years. But once the structure was in place, it became natural to reuse assemblies and auto-cost for other scopes like kitchens:
“I was traditionally just gonna stick around with bathrooms for the next year or two. And then I’m already quoting kitchens… Once you understand Bolster, once you understand the auto cost, and you have assemblies already kind of built.”
That means the investment in building their bathroom library is now paying off across larger, higher-value projects too.
For Eric, the real value of Bolster isn’t just that it can “do quotes” — it’s that it helps fill in the gaps no contractor can realistically hold in their head for every trade, product, and option.
“If there’s a contractor out there that thinks that they have all the pricing dialed in for every assembly and everything that they do… they’re amazing, they should build a software. I highly, highly doubt it… Bolster has bridged the gap. That is the bigger thing. It has bridged the gap of all the unknowns that I don’t understand or know about.”
By investing once to build assemblies, selectors, and variations that reflect how Terra Tech actually sells bathrooms, they’ve turned:
That’s the story behind Terra Tech’s libraries: not just faster quoting for one job, but a repeatable backbone for every future bathroom quote they send.
