Overview
When one item includes both labor and material costs, you can split it into two separate items, one for labor and one for materials. This lets you send each part to a different vendor or subcontractor. You can split an item while creating a vendor order or directly on the estimate.
Split an Item on a Vendor Order
- In the left-hand menu, click Jobs.
- Click Job list and select the estimate. You can also click Pipeline and select it from there.
- In the estimate's left sidebar, click Vendor orders.
- Click Vendor order to create a new order. The Create vendor order window opens.
- Under Items, check the box next to an item that has both labor and material costs (for example, a Deck Build item with 600.00 labor and 500.00 materials).
- Click Split labor/materials under the item name.
- In the Confirm window, click Split item. The item is split into two separate lines, one labor-only and one materials-only (for example, Deck Build - Labor and Deck Build - Materials). The combined total stays the same, and each part can be managed independently.
Send Each Part to the Right Vendor
- In the Create vendor order window, check the box next to the labor item only.
- Click Search or add vendor and select the subcontractor doing the labor (for example, Dream Interiors).
- Click Save. The order is saved and appears in the Vendor orders list.
- Click Vendor order to create another new order.
- Check the box next to the materials item.
- Click Search or add vendor and select your material supplier (for example, Home Depot).
- Click Save.
Both orders now appear in the Vendor orders list, each with its own vendor and order total.
Split an Item on the Estimate
Use this when an item in your estimate, for example one from a public template, includes both labor and material costs on one line.
- In the estimate's left sidebar, click Estimate.
- Hover over the item you want to split.
- Click the six dots to the left of the item.
- Click Split.
- In How would you like to split the item, select one of the following:
- Split item by materials and labor: Splits the selected item into two items, one including labor and one including materials.
- Split item by quantity: Splits the item by quantity and creates a new item with the quantity you set.
When you split by materials and labor, the one item is automatically split into two (for example, Building Permit - Labor and Building Permit - Materials).
- In the top right corner, click Save estimate changes.
Why This Matters
- You can send the labor portion of an item to a subcontractor and the material portion to a supplier, on separate orders.
- Splitting keeps the combined total the same, so your estimate pricing does not change.
Summary
To split labor and materials, open a new vendor order, check the item, click Split labor/materials, and confirm with Split item, then assign each part to its own vendor. You can also split an item on the estimate by hovering over it, clicking the six dots, clicking Split, and choosing Split item by materials and labor.
